Contemporary methods of diagnosis and predicting results of the surgical treatment of aortic stenosis

Prevalence, etiological factors, and main stages of aortic stenosis are reviewed in the article. The possibilities of traditional and contemporary methods of diagnosis, i.e. two- and three-dimensional transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, tissue Doppler imaging and «speckle tracking» are discussed. Current guidelines for surgery of aortic stenosis are presented. Possibilities of the reverse left ventricular remodeling and influence upon prognosis after aortic valve replacement are described.
