Acute renal injury is a common and prognostically important complication in cardiac surgery. Pathogenesis of acute renal failure in cardiac surgery patients is discussed, including its modifiable and unmodifiable risk factors. We analyze our experience of 1456 patients. High level of clinical suspicion and risk minimization are the cornerstones of attributed morbidity and mortality reduction. Maintenance of adequate volemic status and renal perfusion pressure, preoperative function optimization, avoidance of nephrotoxicity, best surgical technique and shortening of cardiopulmonary bypass are the most effective preventive measures.
Key words: acute renal failure, cardiac surgery, risk factors, prevention, treatment.
