Radical correction of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in a 72-year-old patient

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the right atrium is characterized by the inability of one or more pulmonary veins to connect with the left atrium during fetal development. The anomaly has been noted in 0.6 % to 0.7 % of autopsies. The congenital heart defect formed in this way needs surgical correction in childhood. Promptly recognition and surgical treatment of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection can reduce the number of complications and improve prognosis. The age of patients from 2 to 5 years is optimal for surgery in terms of ensuring low risk of surgery, good immediate and long-term consequences. However, in some cases, patients with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection refer to cardiovascular or thoracic surgery clinics in adulthood. We present a clinical case of successful treatment of this pathology in a 72-year old patient. Radical correction of the defect in the open heart was performed with artificial circulation. At the follow-up examination 1 and 2 years after surgery, the patient showed no complaints and good functional status. In the available literature we didn’t find descriptions of surgical treatment of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in patients of similar age or more elderly.
